Factions, also known as classes,[1] are joined when becoming infused with a specific type of magic inside the Magic Cave. The player is offered the choice between becoming a Cryoknight, Guardian, or Hammermage during the Nullify the corruption section of the Main Story quest in Hopeforest. This is a permanent choice, and cannot be changed later.
The three factions form a "combat triangle" in which the magic used by one faction is strong against the second, but weak against the third. Some armor and weapons are only usable by one faction, including those crafted using professions in the Mine of Mantuban. Equipment made using each faction's respective crafting method will tend to carry the weaknesses inherent to that faction; for example, Blacksmith armor (worn by Cryoknights) will typically have low defensive stats against Tempestae (used by Hammermages).
Choosing a faction is required to advance beyond level 50 in combat (Guard or Scout). Attempting to earn XP causes the messages "To advance beyond [Guard/Scout] level 50 you must choose a faction." and "Progress further in the main quest." to appear and knowledge cannot be spent on it. XP earned from quests is not lost.[2]
Factions[edit | edit source]
Cryoknight[edit | edit source]
Cryoknights harness the magic of ice and paranoia, Cryonae.[3] They typically use metal weapons and armor, some of which can be created through the Blacksmith profession, and have a higher chance to proc Cryonae weapons..
Cryoknights currently have access to both a 1-handed and 2-handed melee Cryonae weapon, but in return have no melee Arborae weapon.
Cryonae is strong against Arborae, and weak against Tempestae.
Guardian[edit | edit source]
Guardians are infused with the magic of nature, Arborae. They can use weapons and armor crafted from bone using the Bonewright profession, and have a higher chance to proc Arborae weapons.
Guardians currently have access to both a 1-handed and 2-handed melee Arborae weapon, but in return have no melee Tempestae weapon.
Arborae is strong against Tempestae, and weak against Cryonae.
Hammermage[edit | edit source]
Hammermages use the unpredictable magic of lightning, Tempestae. Their stone weapons (often hammers) and armor can be crafted through the Stonemason profession, and have a higher chance to proc Tempestae weapons.
Hammermages currently have access to both a 1-handed and 2-handed melee Tempestae weapon, but in return have no melee Cryonae weapon.
Tempestae is strong against Cryonae, and weak against Arborae.
