All enemies capable of dropping combat equipment have a chance to drop a Polished Bone Cap after the player has progressed through the main story to the point where they have chosen a [[Faction]]. Before this point, only non-faction equipment can be received.

Players who have chosen the Guardian faction can receive a Polished Bone Cap in {{Common}}, {{Uncommon}}, {{Rare}}, or {{Epic}} [[Rarity]]. Players who chose the [[Hammermage]] or [[Cryoknight]] factions will receive Polished Bone Cap much less frequently, and only in {{Rare}} rarity, as these items are intended for other factions to use with the [[Infusion]] system to make {{Epic}} rarity armor for their faction.

Polished Bone Caps can also be crafted by the [[Armorer]] profession, at an item level up to the Armorer level of the crafter.

The visual appearance of a Polished Bone Cap is dependent on its level. Polished Bone Caps crafted by the Armorer profession use different variants of the materials for each different visual appearance of the Polished Bone Cap.

This total resistance is divided up between the 6 damage types with some variation for each individual value. Since the armor is for the Guardian faction, the [[File:Cryonae damage icon.png|18px]] Cryonae resistance will be on average 20 points lower than the other damage types. From this formula, it can be seen that each increase in Rarity of a Polished Bone Cap is equivalent to 15 additional levels. Thus a Polished Bone Cap at level 0 {{Epic}}, at level 15 {{Rare}}, at level 30 {{Uncommon}}, or at level 45 {{Common}} will all have exactly the same total resistance of '''370'''.
