Experience

Killing monsters and fulfilling certain tasks will grant players experience (also known as xp, exp) which they can accumulate to increase their levels in professions. Players will start a profession with zero experience, and are able to level their professions to level 500.

Required experience amount breakpoints

Based on the above table, we can notice a few breakpoints in the experience formula:

Novice

Levels 0-6 : every level requires around 2,95% more experience than the previous one;

Levels 7-12: every level still requires 2,95% more experience, but the required experience is also doubled;

Levels 13-20: again, every level requires 2,95% more experience, but it is once again doubled.

For example, going from level 13 to level 14 requires slightly more than 4x the experience required from level 4 to level 5.

Apprentice to expert

Levels 21-200: the required experience, per level, has been quintupled (explaining why you suddenly feel like you hit a wall once you are at skill level 20), and every new level from 21 to 200 requires 1,94% more experience than the previous one.

Expert to ultimate

Levels 201-500: the required experience per level is now quadrupled, then every new level requires around 0,60% more experience than the previous one.

Conclusions

Since the experience gain per action grows at a similar rate than experience needed (the percentage increase), but with no breakpoints, one can assume that the amount of actions required to level up from, let's say, 21 to 22, is the same than the one required from 198 to 199.

Levels 0-20 are certainly made easier for the sake of allowing players to explore new professions quickly, and can be seen as the introduction to a skill and its game loop.

Levels 21-200 are intended to be regular levels, requiring some dedication from the player, and setting them up for the final xp wall. Most of the game's content for a particular skill is unlocked prior to level 200.

Finally, levels 201+ encourages the player to identify and specialise in a select few skills that they would like to pursue achievements in, such as leaderboards and the ultimate cape, or for their own enjoyment.

Impact of knowledge conversion into experience

Between levels 20-200: converting one knowledge point into experience grants 25% of a level.

However, between levels 201-500, each KP grants 6,25% of a level. Given that levels 200+ take four times more actions, this means that the experience each KP gives retains the scaling from 20-200. This encourages active training and prevents KP being used to significantly skip over endgame content..

Easy battle penalty (combat)

This article is currently under construction. The information contained within should not be considered fully accurate and/or complete.

In combat and activities which involve combat, such as Crime Dens, defeating a mob that is 11 or more levels below the player's combat level will incur an experience penalty, known as the easy battle penalty, on the experience earned from completing the activity. This penalty increases with increasing level difference.

This penalty is taken into account for experience values displayed on monster information cards, and is calculated using the player's current combat profession compared to the monster's combat level, even if the card of the monster being viewed is from another episode.

Passive combat penalty

The exp penalty incurred for fighting lower tiered passive monsters is displayed below.

Active combat penalty

When initiating active combat, the "Displayed penalty" on the battle initiation interface in-game, as noted in the table below, is not always entirely accurate. The "Actual penalty" column in the table below refers to an estimate of a more precise penalty value calculated using actual numbers. Keep in mind that as monsters have differing base experience, some mathematical rounding errors may occur. The greater the base experience of the mob used to calculate actual penalty, the more accurate the penalty will be.

The maximum penalty applied to active combat experience in this way appears to asymptotically approach 99.9%. Currently the closest point at which this is achieved occurs when comparing a level 500 Watchperson with a level 39 Eyeless Zombie, for which the player will obtain 1xp out of the monster's 758 base experience, resulting in a 100% - 1/758 = 99.87% penalty, correct to two decimal places. As a level 500 Watchperson will obtain 2xp from the next highest levelled monster (a level 48 Snarling Spectral Stalker), this places the current known easy battle penalty soft cap between a level difference of +453 to +461, subject to further testing. It is impossible to visualise any further penalty increases in-game beyond this level difference, even if lower level monster data suggests this to be the case.

As 1xp is the minimum amount of obtainable experience, and given current data, the base experience of any monster below level 39, from which a level 500 Watchperson would still obtain 1xp, would result in a higher final percentage and therefore negatively impact the precision of the calculated penalty. For example, a level 500 fighting a level 1 monster would still only gain 1xp, but because the monster's base xp is only 205, this results in a less precise calculation as 1/205 is bigger than 1/758.
