People are misleading information on how knowledge points are gained. It is extremely obvious that the % gained is based on the xp gained by actions and not by the action you perform itself, for example, killing different level monsters does NOT give a 3% flat increase, the % you gain is greater if the monster gives more exp when killed and the % is less if the exp gained from the monster is less when killed.
(Not a stub. Adding UH and a note that it's inaccurate.)

While doing an action that yields Experience of any kind, except while doing Passive activities, a bar will fill up at a fixed amount, dependent on the actionexp (forgained. example,It's killingunclear anyhow creaturemuch inexp combatis yieldscurrently 3required for 100% knowledge, but the required about of exp does not appear to change every time a knowledge point) is gained. Previously it was beleived that certain actions would guarentee a certain % of knowledge progression however this is inaccurate as the % gained very clearly changes based on the amountof exp gained per action. Upon reaching 100% a Knowledge point will be gained which can be spent to unlock a Passive activity. Knowledge points can alternatively be converted into a variable amount of silver, with 12 Silver being the starting base amount, or experience for any skill at level 20 or above. Like the silver reward, exp rewards likewise scale with the level of the profession, so that it always equates to approximately 25% of the experience requirement for the next level from levels 20-200. Once level 200 is reached, that percentage drops down to 6.25%. This experience can be boosted by an XP Potion.

Unlocking activities will raise the amount of Knowledge points in that particular Profession, a higher level activity can only be unlocked by unlocking the previous activities first.
