Factions, also known as classes, are joined when becoming infused with a specific type of magic inside the Magic Cave. The player is offered the choice between becoming a Cryoknight, Guardian, or Hammermage during the Nullify the corruption section of the Main Story quest in Hopeforest. This is a permanent choice, and cannot be changed later.

The three factions form a "combat triangle" in which the magic used by one faction is strong against the second, but weak against the third. A particular faction does not possess elemental melee weapons matching the vulnerability of the faction that is strong against them. Some armor and weapons are only usable by one faction, including those crafted using professions in the Mine of Mantuban. Equipment made using each faction's respective crafting method will tend to carry the weaknesses inherent to that faction; for example, Blacksmith armor (worn by Cryoknights) will typically have low defensive stats against Tempestae (used by Hammermages).
